Quick Water Filter Guide

How to Choose the Right Whole-Home Water Filtration System

The best whole-home water filtration system depends on your water source, water test results, household size, and treatment goals. City-water homes often need help with chlorine, chloramine, PFAS, VOCs, taste, odor, and scale. Well-water homes may need filtration for sediment, iron, sulfur, hardness, bacteria, arsenic, nitrates, or other location-specific concerns.

If you have city water

Look for filtration that helps reduce disinfectant taste and odor, chlorine or chloramine concerns, PFAS, VOCs, sediment, and scale-related problems throughout the home.

If you have well water

Start with testing. Private wells can vary widely and may need treatment for hardness, iron, sulfur odor, sediment, bacteria, arsenic, nitrates, or other local water issues.

If you have hard water

Salt-free conditioning may help reduce scale without salt bags or brine discharge. Traditional softening and salt-free conditioning work differently, so the right choice depends on your goals.

Questions to ask before choosing a system

  • Do you use city water or private well water?
  • Are you mainly concerned about drinking water or the whole home?
  • Do you have hard water, scale buildup, odor, staining, or sediment?
  • Have you tested for PFAS, lead, arsenic, nitrates, bacteria, or other contaminants?
  • Do you want a low-maintenance system, reverse osmosis drinking water, or both?

Quick answer

For most homes, the best first step is to identify the water source and test the water. From there, you can compare city water systems, well water systems, salt-free conditioning options, and reverse osmosis drinking water systems based on what your home actually needs.
