When more than 4 million gallons of untreated sewage entered the Arkansas River near Pueblo, Colorado, the headlines were enough to make anyone look twice at a glass of water.
But here's the more useful part of the story: the spill contaminated river water and pushed E. coli levels sharply higher downstream, while local and state officials reported that municipal drinking water systems weren't contaminated by the incident.[1][2]
Those two facts can both be true. River water, source water, treated city water, and private well water are connected in different ways, but they aren't the same thing.
Quick answer: Yes, sewage can contaminate a drinking-water source if bacteria, viruses, parasites, or other pollutants reach that source. But a sewage spill in a river doesn't automatically mean nearby tap water is unsafe. Public water systems use treatment, disinfection, monitoring, and distribution controls to protect drinking water. Private well owners have more responsibility for testing and treatment, especially after a nearby contamination event.
What Happened in the Arkansas River?
On August 27, 2026, the City of Pueblo reported an unplanned discharge of untreated sewage into the Arkansas River near Confluence Park. The city said the release came from a wastewater pipe inside a stormwater pipe after an older concrete patch failed. The discharge was stopped later that morning.[1]
State and local testing later found elevated E. coli downstream, leading to water-contact warnings along portions of the river. By September 4, officials had lifted the advisory for John Martin Reservoir after repeated testing showed E. coli had returned to recreational standards there, while an advisory remained in effect along part of the Arkansas River corridor.[3]
Just as important: Pueblo Water stated that the sewage discharge occurred downstream of its treatment plant and had no effect on the city's drinking water.[2]
That's the part homeowners should pay attention to.
Can Sewage Get Into Drinking Water?
It can. Human and animal waste can introduce microorganisms into rivers, lakes, groundwater, and other drinking-water sources. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies sewage and septic systems as possible sources of harmful microbes in drinking water, including E. coli, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium.[4]

That's why public-health agencies may issue recreation warnings for rivers and lakes even when nearby municipal drinking water remains safe. The question isn't simply, "Is E. coli somewhere in the watershed?" The more useful question is, "Has contamination affected the water source or system that serves my home?"
City Water and Well Water Are Different
If you're on municipal water, your utility is responsible for treating and monitoring the public drinking-water system. During a contamination event, the utility and local or state health agencies are the best sources for current drinking-water guidance.
Private wells are different. The EPA and CDC both note that private well owners are responsible for testing and maintaining their own drinking water. The CDC recommends testing private wells at least once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, and testing again when there are known water problems in the area or other reasons to suspect contamination.[5][6]

The Arkansas River spill is a useful reminder of something homeowners don't always get from a headline: water safety depends on the full path the water takes.
